B-Corp interview with Christina Kousiounelou

At Selina Finance, we believe business can and should be a force for good. Following our recent B Corp certification, we sat down with Christina Kousiounelou, our Senior People Operations Manager, to explore what this milestone means for Selina, our customers, our people, and the planet.

Why is it important for Selina Finance to be B Corp certified?

“At Selina Finance, we believe that financial services should be a force for good. Becoming a B Corp means meeting the highest social and environmental performance standards, accountability, and transparency. It’s a powerful validation of our commitment to responsible lending, ethical business practices, and creating financial products that genuinely benefit people. This certification isn’t just a label; it reflects our values and mission to drive positive change, empower one another, take ownership, and put our customers at the heart of everything we do.”

What does B Corp certification mean for Selina Finance?

“Achieving B Corp status is a significant milestone acknowledging our efforts to build a responsible and impactful business. The rigorous certification process required us to critically assess and improve every aspect of our operations – from governance and employee well-being to customer impact and environmental sustainability. This certification confirms that we are held to the highest standards and remain committed to continuous improvement, ensuring we always act in the best interest of our customers, employees, and society at large.”

What are some of the key initiatives Selina Finance has implemented for customers, employee well-being and the environment?

“Our mission to support financial well-being starts with our customers. Many of them face financial stress, and our Second Charge mortgage products (often referred to as secured loans) help them consolidate debts, reduce monthly expenses, and achieve long-term financial security. On average, our customers reduce their monthly outgoings by £625, simplifying their finances and eliminating the hassle of managing multiple payments.

For our employees, we prioritise a strong, supportive culture that values well-being, development, and work-life balance. We offer flexible working arrangements, personal growth opportunities, and a collaborative environment where people can thrive. Our people’s well-being is also at the core of our benefits. We offer a variety of wellness initiatives from which our people can choose, including mental health programmes, wellness tools, and physical activities.

On the environmental side, we take our impact seriously. We actively reduce our carbon footprint through digital-first operations, responsible sourcing, and ethical partnerships. Our financial products also empower customers to make sustainable choices, such as investing in solar panels and energy-efficient home upgrades."

What are the next steps for Selina Finance in its sustainability and social impact journey?

"Becoming a B Corp is just the beginning. We will continue strengthening our social and environmental commitments by further embedding sustainability into our business strategy. This includes refining our products to serve customers’ long-term financial well-being better, further improving diversity and inclusion within our workforce, and deepening our engagement with ethical finance initiatives.

We’re also looking to grow our team with like-minded individuals who share our vision of responsible finance. As we scale, we want to attract people who believe in using finance as a tool for good and who are excited about making a real impact while building an innovative and forward-thinking company.

This certification is a significant achievement and a commitment to ongoing progress. We are excited about what lies ahead and the opportunity to lead by example in the fintech space."
